JONATHAN BLANSHARD

Jonathan Blanshard graduated in medicine from the Middlesex Hospital Medical School in London. After basic surgical training in plastic surgery, orthopaedics and accident and emergency his ENT training started at the Royal National Throat Nose and Ear Hospital in London. This was followed by specialist ENT training in Bristol and the South West.

He has been an ENT Consultant at Basingstoke and North Hampshire Hospital since 1996 and has developed the service to now provide all aspects of ENT care for the local population and training for the next generation of ENT Surgeons. Training requires quality assurance and for this he is an examiner for the Royal College of Surgeons. He has an interest in hearing problems in adults and children, including tinnitus and vertigo, as well as holding voice clinics with the assistance of a speech therapist. He developed the local Bone Anchored Hearing Aid service in response to the need of patients who are unable to tolerate a normal hearing aid.

He has extensive experience in surgery to improve hearing and the treatment of mastoid disease, including reconstructive and revision surgery. This stems from time spent during his training in Australia at the Royal Brisbane Hospital, a centre renowned for its expertise in mastoid reconstructions. While there he gained valuable experience of extensive head and neck cancer surgery and advanced reconstructive techniques.

He is Associate Medical Director for strategy for Hampshire Hospitals FT representing HHFT in the current system wide reorganisation of NHS services.  He is Secretary to the Ark Company who run the Ark www.arkcentre.com , a charitable education, training and conferencing centre at Basingstoke Hospital. In the past he has worked in Guinea and Bangladesh for Charities involved in ENT surgical services and training in the third world. More recently he has worked in Nepal for BRINOS who have set up an ear care centre in Nepalgunj to carry out ear surgery and training for Western Nepal.
